Lying at the northeastern tip of India, Arunachal Pradesh (covering 83,743 kms) borders Bhutan on the West, China on the north, Myanmar on the east and the state of Assam on the South. Much of Arunachal is covered by the Himalaya, although parts of Lohit, Changlang, and Tirap are covered by the Patkai hills. The climatic conditions varies with elevation. The upper Himalaya near the Tibetan border enjoy an alpine climate. The Middle Himalaya experiences a temperate climate suitable for growing apples, oranges, other fruit and food items. Areas at sub Himalayan elevation experience a humid sub- tropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The state receives heavy rainfall between 80 – 160 inches annually, most of it falling between May and September. The mountain slopes and hills are covered in rich and dense forests from dwarf rhododendron, oak, pine, maple, fir, and juniper to teak. Rich in flora and fauna, Arunachal boasts of more to than 500 species of orchids alone. Its rivers are ideal for angling, boating, rafting and its rugged terrain with the high snow clad mountains to the north add to the scenic beauty of the rolling lofty hills making it suitable for trekking and holidaying in a serene atmosphere.
Divided into fifteen districts, each administered by a district collector, one of the main attractions of this lesser known state of India is its heritage of a diverse and rich culture, language and beliefs. 65% of the Arunachalis belong to 20 major –collective tribes and 82 tribes. The most notable of these tribes are the Adi, Nishi, Monpa and Apatani.
Once known as the “Hidden Land”, Arunachal is the only state in India that was completely closed to all outsiders since the beginning of time. Opened in 1993, the region remains a land that time has forgotten. With its vast unexplored areas, colourful friendly tribes, high unclimbed Himalayan peaks, Arunachal has the potential to offer its visitors a variety of activities from cultural, wildlife, trekking and climbing to river rafting – all in the most pristine of surroundings. |
